Beaches in Galveston range from public Seawall access to managed parks at the island’s east and west ends. The most direct choice is a Seawall beach; Stewart Beach, East Beach and West End access points offer other options with different parking and entry arrangements.

  • Closest: Seawall beach access is a short walk away.
  • East End: Access Point 1 is East Beach R.A. Apffel Park, and Access Point 2 is Stewart Beach.
  • West End: Pocket Park #1 allows on-beach parking; Pocket Park #3 / 11-Mile Road has on- and off-beach parking.

Seawall beaches are the easiest Galveston beach access to reach, with public shoreline close to the Seawall. The City of Galveston identifies Access Point 3 as Seawall Beach Urban Park.

If you are driving, the City says Seawall Boulevard parking is enforced daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Sunday. Free parking areas are on the north side between 12th and 19th streets, 33rd and 39th streets, 53rd and 61st streets, and 85th and 91st streets.

The Seawall works well when you want beach access without making a separate trip across the island. You can choose an access point based on where you are along the boulevard, then check the City of Galveston’s official site before you go for current parking details.

A one-day Galveston itinerary from the Seawall can pair beach time with other stops around the island.

Stewart Beach and East Beach

Stewart Beach and East Beach

Stewart Beach and East Beach are city beach parks on Galveston’s East End, with a daily beach user fee and seasonal pass option. The City identifies Access Point 2 as Stewart Beach and Access Point 1 as East Beach R.A. Apffel Park.

Both access points have a $15 daily beach user fee and a $50 seasonal pass. These managed access points suit a planned beach outing if you prefer to head to a named park rather than pick a Seawall access point.

West End Pocket Parks and the state park shore

West End Pocket Parks and the state park shore

West End access ranges from city pocket parks with parking close to the shore to Galveston Island State Park, where day-use entry can be limited by capacity. The parks differ in how parking and access work, so decide whether you want a quick shoreline stop or a state-park visit.

Pocket Park #1

Pocket Park #1 is at 11102 Termini-San Luis Pass Road and allows on-beach parking. It is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with a $15 entry fee; leashed pets are allowed. It suits a drive onto the beach rather than parking in a separate lot.

Pocket Park #3 / 11-Mile Road

At Access Point 13/14, on-beach parking costs $15 per day and off-beach parking in the main lot costs $10 per day. There are also 30 free parking spaces north of the main lot, available first come, first served. You can choose between parking on the sand, using the main lot or trying for one of the free spaces.

Galveston Island State Park

Galveston Island State Park is at 14901 FM 3005. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says entrance costs $5 per adult per day, with free entry for children 12 and under.

The park is open daily, but it often reaches capacity; reserve a day-use pass or call ahead to guarantee entry. March through October, especially weekends, is the park’s busy season.

The park’s shore and access options are covered in this guide to Galveston Island State Park beaches, trails and access.

Choosing a beach for your visit

Choosing a beach for your visit

Choose a Seawall access point for the simplest trip, a named city beach park for an East End destination, or a West End park or state park for a farther-flung shoreline outing. Your best fit depends on how you plan to arrive and whether you need parking close to the beach.

  1. For the least travel: Start with Seawall beach access.
  2. For an East End park: Compare Stewart Beach and East Beach, both with a daily user fee and seasonal pass.
  3. For beach parking: Pocket Park #1 permits on-beach parking; Access Point 13/14 has on-beach, main-lot and limited free spaces.
  4. For a state park visit: Reserve a day-use pass or call ahead, since the park can reach capacity.

Seawall beach access is a short walk from a motel on Galveston’s Seawall.
