Beach and bay-side settings

Galveston Island State Park has both beach-side and bay-side areas, giving you two different coastal settings to spend time in. The beach-side day-use area has paved sidewalks from parking to picnic areas and the beach, although drifting sand may cover parts of the beach sidewalk.

Swimming, picnicking and fishing are among the activities available in the park. Four beach wheelchairs are available to borrow at park headquarters; they are not self-propelled, so a companion is needed to push one. The park’s restrooms have accessible facilities, including accessible parking, paved sidewalks and grab bars in toilet stalls.

Beach horseback riding is allowed from November through February only. If you’re comparing shoreline settings around the island, the guide to Galveston beaches easiest to reach from Gaido’s Seaside Inn covers another part of the beach-planning picture.

Trails and outdoor activities

Trails and outdoor activities

The park has four miles of trails through its habitats, along with an observation platform, photo blinds and boardwalks over dunes and marshes. You can hike or bike on park trails and roads unless signs indicate otherwise; motor vehicles are not allowed on trails. Keep pets leashed on trails to protect them and wildlife.

Easy walks

The 0.4-mile Eskimo Curlew Trail passes through wetlands restoration areas. For a longer walk, the easy Prairie Trail is a 3.3-mile round trip through coastal prairie to freshwater ponds. The easy Alligator Loop is a 1.0-mile route around a large freshwater pond; watch for alligators.

Paddling routes

Jenkins Bayou Paddling Trail is a moderate 3.3-mile round trip. Oak Bayou Paddling Trail is a challenging 5.4-mile round trip, so consider its difficulty when choosing a route.

Other park activities include mountain biking, camping, geocaching and nature study, as well as bird-watching. The park’s trails and outdoor activities offer a different outing from a Bolivar Peninsula ferry day trip.
